How do you join the hooks? What's a cheap hook for?😢
Hey Christopher, join the hooks with nylon or fluoro mono, and any light wire hook that is cheap--because you're cutting the bend/barb. Thanks!
What an amazing video, love it. I keep watching it just for the commentary. Instructions are amazing too.😂
Thanks!
Nice hopper! Tight lines🐛🐜🕷️!!!!
Thanks!
Where do you get your tab eyes!?
Bear's Den. 👍
What is parapost wing material, i mean i cant get here in our country so im asking if there’s any diy for this material?
Hi, it is similar to Darlon or Antron. You could even use Enrico Puglisi material. Good luck!
@@toflyfish thank you 🙏
You make this look way too easy. Can I buy a few?
Hey, thanks for the kind words! I don't commercial tie anymore, but you might be able to get a local fly shop to do it for you. Thanks!
Lol. This isn't new ar all.
It isn't even comparable to a clouser. Clousers are heavy flies that ride with the hook point up. This pattern is unweighted and rides with the hook point down. A better comparison would be a deciever. Still a great tying video though
Fair enough! I don't have to choose one over the other, so I'll just take both... Thanks for the comment!
option- I take true turn hooks or bend straight shank hooks and bend them that way . tye shank, super glue two pieces of foam with hook between them so hooks face out to the side as fish lure will be flat and curved on the water. tie a little deer hair for tail, glue cheap moving eyes .paint minnow if you choose. on the water give little twitching, then pull under water stop and let float to surface while twitching, and twitching on the surface. what you have is a struggling, slow dying minnow. A really good attractor .papa wishing you well 😊
Hey Johnny, if you tie this, let us know how it works! Thanks!
@toflyfish I have tied it many years ago and worked good . PAPA
New to tying. Could um I size down the hook to a size 6? Would this still work? Thank you!
Absolutely, you can use any size you want. Making it smaller will definitely be better in some cases, particularly when you have slightly smaller bass in heavily pressured ponds. Here's the article for recipe: toflyfish.com/enrico-puglisi-bluegill-and-sunfish-fly/
@@toflyfish Perfect, I used a size 6 hook, the shank was a little short but great practice for someone new to tying. Thanks!
@@dannyb2701 Nice!
What hook?? Nice!
Muito bom 👍
Obrigado!
A fly is a lure.
IMO, if it requires a fly line in order to be thrown, it's a fly. I mean, that's why fly lines were invented - to cast things too light to throw otherwise.
I agree more or less. With the modern lines that can pretty much throw a small poodle, it's tough to tell sometimes. Thanks for chiming in. Cheers!
@@toflyfish That's true - and I'll admit to throwing small lures on my fly rods! 😁 Plenty of lures are too light to throw without weight added in some way: dick nites, spinner rigs, etc I'm assuming, though, that we're talking about materials tied on a hook or tube like the fly above, when does it become a lure? I'd say when you can chuck it far enough to effectively fish with a spinning rod with no weight attached. Some of my jig type "flies" can definitely be fished both ways. In fact, if I've tied a streamer fly that's working well for me, I'll often tie up the same pattern on a heavier jighead for my husband to use on his spinning rod 😊 Obviously, I'm a fisherman and not a fly purist, lol Cheers! 🍻
Great vid, one of the best in Hollow Fleye tying. Thank you for the instruction. I was wondering for each section of hollow tie, do the bucktail gets shorter and shorter, or do you use the same length as you move towards the hook eye? Cheers!
Hey thanks for the comment! I normally use pretty much the same length of bucktail on Hollow Fleyes. The tie-in spot helps to balance the materials. With Bulkheads, I use much smaller length bucktail on the head. For me, Bulkheads are Hollow Fleyes up to the head, then you take the super hollow short sections towards the base of the bucktail and spin it to make a compact head. Hope that helps!
@@toflyfish Thanks for the tips. Will give a try using similar length for each bucktail section. But I am confused with your second paragraph, it is due to my limited knowledge in fly tying. I am not sure I know what bulkhead means in fly tying. In your last sentence you mentioned to spin bucktail to make a compact head, can I assume you meant to spin the bucktail like deer hair in a rolled muddler? Cheers!
I was just referring to another fly that's fairly close to the Hollow Fleye. Good luck with your tying!
@@toflyfish Thanks. Cheers!
beautiful!! I'm going to make it with a 4/0 hook to fish for dorado!!
Awesome! Let me know how it goes!
What hook is that
Hey TXO, here's the link to the recipe: toflyfish.com/enrico-puglisi-shad-baitfish-pattern-saltwater-bass/ It's a Gamakatsu 294, which doesn't exist anymore if I'm not mistaken. I bought a bunch of them. You might be able to find some somewhere. Good luck!
Next level commentary.
Thanks, DTF!
I like how you used the curved part of the hook and tied into two places. I’m trying to figure out how to navigate these hooks for a similar pattern. Good video.
Thanks FTT!
What's EP fiber?
Hey, Ronald. EP fiber is a synthetic fiber for fly tying. It is short for "Enrico Puglisi" fiber. Enrico Puglisi is a fly tyer and owner. He has hundreds of different flies and materials. Thanks!
@@toflyfish just got some different colors in from Amazon. Cool stuff.
Good way to make use of scraps and waste material. Thanks for the tip.
👍Thanks!
Practical and efficient! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks so much!
SUPER!😊
Thanks so much, Dave! I've really enjoyed some of your flies as well over the years.
Weight and simplicity = Clouser This fly...no weight, lots of steps, doesn't come close to a Clouser!! Anyway, nice looking fly!
Thanks for chiming in, Mark!
What kind of eyes did you use?
Hey Brian, see recipe below: toflyfish.com/hollow-fleye/ Thanks!
One thing: gorgeous!
Thanks!
What size hook?
Hi Victoria. toflyfish.com/hopper-fly-pattern-mr-peanut-hopper/
Holy fuck those are nice I need more flies like this! I need flies for panfish and bass
Thanks!
I love the style of those eyes. Where can I get them?
Hey PH, these are called tab eyes. Bear's Den and Mad River Outfitters are great places to get them from. Hope this helps!
Are these meant to be used as dry fly?
No, you retrieve them as if they were a shad. You can use a sinking line or a floating line--floating not getting the fly as deep. Thanks!
Sexy shad. Cool, used a template😮great 💡 idea! Thanks!
Thanks, Joe!
Do you ever tie a weedless version of this fly? Great looking baitfish pattern man!
I have not. I usually use it in rivers with current or in bodies of water with open-water fish like stripers. You could easily add one though. Thanks!
How do I buy one
This specific pattern is not for sale to the best of my knowledge. Just a pattern I've used. Sorry!
how far could you cast this with a medium fast 8wt with rio striper line on it?
Depends on the caster, the leader, the hook, and the conditions. On the lawn or with a tailwind, you could cast to backing. The fly is normally quite aerodynamic. Most experienced casters in decent conditions could cast the fly from a boat 80+ feet with the setup you mentioned fairly comfortably. Tons of variables in casting, but that's a fair estimation with this fly.
It’s sad that basically no one knows what annual cicadas which is that are
A lot of people hear them every year, but yes, many don't realize what is actually making the noise.
Isn’t a fly a lure
Depends on who you ask. I've never heard a fly angler say, "I was out lure fishing," or "What lure did you use?" You will hear that all the time with crankbaits, jigs, etc. It's just fun for me to think if there is much difference between larger, heavier flies and "lures." Thanks.
Beautiful. Bet it works great. Gonna tie some up. Thanks.
Awesome! Let me know how they do for you.
What type of feather do you use for hackle. Thanks
Hi, Patrick. I use a variety of hackles, depending on what I have on hand or what I find. I like webby hackle and will even use schlappen at times. It depends on what you want out of the pattern though. If you want profile with easy castability, then stiffer smaller hackle is often desirable. If you want flowing movement with hovering on the pause, then heavier hackled flies with webbier hackle is a great choice. Good luck!
@@toflyfish thank you, great videos!
@@patrickmurphy1792 Thanks!
what size hook is that?
#16: toflyfish.com/blue-winged-olive-cripple-fly-pattern/. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing
Thanks man!
Little bit of bucktail will help maintain profile on the pause
What type of hook is this?
Hey Zayd, here's the full recipe, thanks! toflyfish.com/enrico-puglisi-shad-baitfish-pattern-saltwater-bass/
Flys are hooks with material attached to them. Lures are materials with hooks attached to them.
Very interesting definition. I think you run into a question or two with soft plastics and jigs with this definition, but it works in most every other case. Thanks for chiming in!
my god I need this!!!!! For my Bass fishing! Where can I buy one?
Hi Micheal, sorry to say that these aren't on the market. Perhaps you could pay a local fly shop to tie a few for you. Good luck!
When you want to turn your 4 weight rig into something you need a 6 weight ti throw, you make this lol
Hey ThatSlyB. Variety is the spice of life. But in all seriousness, using a 7.5' 3x leader would turn this over with ease, particularly if you had a 4 wt. fly line with a powerful head. Moderate wind and casts.
@toflyfish I was only kidding. I just always found it a bit misleading when you see articles or guide videos (usually just shorts) thar imply people should replace a little strike indicator with a dropper hopper and then get shown something the size of hopzilla 😆 I dont know why foam on smaller mayflys is not more popular. I usually make parachute style droppers. And I take some foam (not like this here but just for some added buoyancy) and cut small thin strips of it and tie them in along the hookshank and then dub over it. Doesnt add much bulk but adds buoyancy without changing much of the fly. Never seen it shown though. Im sure I didnt invent it lol
@@ThatSB Yes, I try to use foam wherever I can, since it floats so well and is super durable. Definitely agree that we should have more smaller patterns with foam as a body.👍
Every pattern is called "the best" all the time lol
True. I was talking more about the style of pattern, cripples. My pattern is a simple and effective version. "The best' mayfly cripple pattern? Maybe not, but it's always worked for me. Thanks!
Stupid music and annoying commentary
What is the white hair you used for the body?
Enrico Puglisi fibers, white or cream. Here's the full recipe and access to the templates: toflyfish.com/enrico-puglisi-shad-baitfish-pattern-saltwater-bass/ Thanks!
Great looking pattern!
Thanks, Deb! I appreciate it!
